Chennai Super Kings have confirmed that MS Dhoni will continue as a player after the franchise appointed former India pacer Zaheer Khan as their new head coach. Dhoni had emerged as one of the names linked with the CSK coaching position following Stephen Fleming’s departure after IPL 2026. There was also speculation that the legendary wicketkeeper-batter could take up an official mentorship role, given the influence he has had on the franchise’s tactical decisions over the years.
However, CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan has now clarified that Dhoni remains available as a player rather than moving into an official coaching position. “He is available as a player,” Viswanathan told The Indian Express.
Dhoni missed the entire IPL 2026 season due to injury concerns. He also stayed away from CSK’s home venue, the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk, during the campaign, reportedly choosing not to draw attention away from a younger squad.

With Zaheer now taking charge, the former India fast bowler will have to assess how Dhoni fits into CSK’s plans for the upcoming season. Zaheer’s appointment also adds an interesting dimension to Dhoni’s future at CSK. The former India captain has shared a strong association with the franchise for years, while Zaheer has previously spoken highly of Dhoni’s cricketing understanding.
The key question now is how frequently Dhoni features in the playing XI. At 45, managing his workload could become an important part of CSK’s strategy, particularly if the franchise wants to balance experience with youth.
