Peter Handscomb is leading Australia A on a challenging tour of India as the visitors look to fine-tune their preparations for next year’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The tour includes two four-day matches and three 50-over games, with all five fixtures scheduled to take place in Puducherry between September 22 and October 11.
The experienced Handscomb has plenty of familiarity with Indian conditions and bowling attacks. The 35-year-old has played 11 Tests against India during his international career, including all four matches of Australia’s most recent Test tour of India in 2023.
Peter Handscomb also arrives with strong domestic experience. He finished last season as the leading run-scorer in the Sheffield Shield, accumulating 724 runs at an average of 34.47. With another opportunity to face India, the Australia A captain acknowledged the difficulty of scoring consistently against a disciplined Indian bowling attack. “You’ve got to attack when you get the opportunity to score, but it is tough,” Handscomb was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

“The Indian bowlers are incredibly accurate, consistent and don’t give a lot of bad balls. You’ve got to try and find a way to score off good balls. It can be tough when the ball misbehaves, but that’s the challenge of playing in India.”
Handscomb’s comments underline the precision that India’s bowling attack brings, particularly in conditions where batters can face additional challenges from the surface and movement.
Despite the difficulty, the Australia A captain views playing against India as an invaluable experience. Having competed against several of the country’s leading players at Test level, Handscomb believes such contests provide an opportunity to learn and measure his game against elite opposition.
“It’s tough to keep coming up against India, but it’s also such an amazing thing to do. There are some of the best players in the world here and I’m lucky enough to have played against some of them,” Peter Handscomb added.

The second four-day match of the Australia A tour began on Tuesday, September 29, giving Handscomb and his teammates another chance to test themselves against India A. With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy scheduled for next year, the series is an important part of the preparation for both sides as they assess players and combinations ahead of the major Test assignment.
