Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are set to appoint former India pacer Mohit Sharma as their bowling coach ahead of the IPL 2027 season. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed to The Times of India that newly appointed head coach Zaheer Khan selected Mohit as part of his support staff.
It remains unclear whether Mohit Sharma will replace bowling consultant Eric Simmons, who has been an important part of CSK’s coaching setup under long-serving head coach Stephen Fleming. The franchise is also reshaping its support staff after Zaheer replaced Fleming as head coach on a one-year contract.
Mohit, a right-arm pacer from Haryana, retired from professional cricket in December. At 38, he is set to become one of the younger coaches in the IPL. Zaheer is also expected to have significant input in the appointment of CSK’s next batting coach, following Michael Hussey’s departure to join the Australian national team setup.

During his international career, Mohit Sharma represented India in 34 matches, including 20 under former captain MS Dhoni. He was also part of India’s 2015 World Cup campaign. However, it was with CSK that Mohit established himself as a prominent IPL bowler.
He made his CSK debut in 2013 and enjoyed an impressive three-season spell, claiming 57 wickets. Although his return to the franchise in 2019 did not produce similar results, Mohit subsequently represented Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals.

His appointment alongside Zaheer Khan could signal CSK’s renewed focus on developing a strong bowling unit. Mohit was never reliant on express pace, but his ability to read the game, vary his deliveries and maximise his strengths made him an effective IPL bowler.
That experience could prove particularly valuable for CSK’s younger pacers. Mohit’s 27-wicket campaign for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2023, despite being in his mid-30s, showcased his tactical intelligence and adaptability.

His variations, including slower deliveries and changes of pace, helped him remain effective against modern batters. If Mohit can pass that knowledge to CSK’s emerging bowlers, the franchise could strengthen its pace-bowling resources significantly ahead of IPL 2027.
