Rohit Sharma narrowly missed out on another ODI century after being dismissed for 92 during the third ODI between India and West Indies at the PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh on Saturday, October 3. The Indian opener looked set to register his third hundred in four innings before his knock came to an end in the 25th over.

Rohit had entered the series finale on the back of a spectacular century in Guwahati, where India chased down a record 406 against West Indies. However, this time around, the veteran opener had to adopt a more cautious approach after India were reduced to 4/2 in the third over.

Jayden Seales struck twice in quick succession, dismissing captain Shubman Gill before removing Virat Kohli for a golden duck. With two key wickets down early, Rohit was forced to carefully negotiate the new ball and rebuild the innings alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad.

The opening powerplay proved challenging for India, who managed only 28 runs during the first 10 overs. Rohit gradually settled in and then accelerated during the middle phase. He brought up his half-century from 63 deliveries before taking on the West Indies spinners.

The Hitman targeted Vitel Lawes and Gudakesh Motie, collecting six boundaries across successive overs to move rapidly into the 90s. However, after facing three consecutive dot balls from Keemo Paul, Rohit attempted to break the pressure with a pull shot.

The shot did not come off as intended. Rohit caught the ball towards the toe end of the bat, sending it towards deep midwicket. Jewel Andrew held his composure to complete the catch, ending Rohit’s innings at 92.

It was the first time Rohit had been dismissed in the 90s since the fourth ODI against Australia in Mohali in 2019, when Jhye Richardson removed him for 95.

Rohit’s departure also gave India’s middle order its first substantial opportunity in the series. India had won the opening two ODIs by eight wickets, meaning the middle order had not been required to make a major contribution.

With Rohit gone around the halfway stage, vice-captain KL Rahul came into the innings. Meanwhile, Gaikwad continued to make the most of his opportunity at No. 4, bringing up his third ODI fifty. At the time of the report, India had moved to 159/3 after 28 overs, with Rahul and Gaikwad looking to guide the hosts towards a strong total.
