West Indies suffered another setback during their run chase against India in the third ODI at the PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh. Just as captain Shai Hope was closing in on a century, India struck again by dismissing Sherfane Rutherford, putting further pressure on the visitors while they chased a daunting target of 352 runs.

Rutherford’s dismissal came in the final delivery of the 30th over, with Naman Dhir providing the breakthrough. The Indian all-rounder bowled a shorter delivery that skidded through towards the batter. Rutherford stayed deep inside his crease and attempted to create enough room to free his arms. However, he managed only a faint edge. The ball travelled through to wicketkeeper KL Rahul, who made no mistake behind the stumps to complete the catch.
Rutherford was initially unconvinced by the umpire’s decision and immediately opted for a review. There was some uncertainty over whether the ball had made contact with the bat or Rutherford’s back pad, but UltraEdge provided the answer.

The technology showed a clear spike as the ball passed the bat, confirming that Rutherford had edged the delivery. The decision was subsequently upheld, forcing the West Indies batter to walk back after scoring 24 runs from 25 balls, including two boundaries.
The wicket was another important blow for West Indies, particularly because Rutherford had joined Hope after the dismissal of Amir Jangoo. The pair needed to build a substantial partnership to keep the visitors within reach of India’s massive target.
Hope had opened the innings alongside John Campbell, who had been one of West Indies’ standout batters earlier in the series. Campbell scored a half-century in the first ODI before producing a century in the second game. However, he failed to replicate that form in the series finale and was dismissed cheaply by Mohammed Siraj.

Sherfane Rutherford in disbelief over the umpire’s decision! 😳
Rutherford immediately reviewed it with huge confidence, insisting that his bat had hit his pad, not the ball. But after the review, TV umpire Saikat from Bangladesh upheld the on-field decision and gave him out. pic.twitter.com/ihyOe0S3Qh

Heartbreaking decision for Sherfane Rutherford! 💔 The TV replays appeared to show a clear gap between the bat and the ball, while Snicko seemed to pick up the bat hitting the pad. Yet, he was given out

There is a clear gap between bat and ball here (in the decisive frame). I do not think Sherfane Rutherford was out. pic.twitter.com/jU3upowRhz

Following Campbell’s departure, Hope and Jangoo steadied the innings and kept the scoreboard moving before India broke their partnership through a brilliant direct hit from Virat Kohli. Jangoo departed for 67, further increasing the pressure on the West Indies middle order.
Earlier, India posted 351/5 after choosing to bat first. KL Rahul led the scoring with a sensational unbeaten 129 off 87 deliveries, while Rohit Sharma contributed a valuable 92. Ruturaj Gaikwad also scored a half-century to strengthen India’s total.

West Indies therefore needed a major partnership to stay alive in the chase. With Hope leading the resistance, the visitors still had an opportunity to challenge India, but wickets at regular intervals continued to make the task harder.
India had already sealed the three-match ODI series by winning the opening two matches, making the final a dead rubber in terms of the series result. However, the contest remained significant for India as they continue to assess their combinations ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. For West Indies, the immediate objective was to avoid a clean sweep and finish the series with a strong performance.
