West Indies batter Shimron Hetmyer was involved in one of the most unusual moments of the India vs West Indies T20I in Lucknow after being run out despite his bat appearing to be inside the crease. Hetmyer faced only two deliveries before his innings came to an abrupt end. At first glance, it looked as though the West Indies batter had safely made his ground, with his bat seemingly around half a foot inside the crease.

However, the third umpire ruled him out because the bat was not grounded when Sanju Samson broke the stumps. Shimron Hetmyer had dived while attempting to complete the run, but his bat remained in the air. When Samson collected the ball and dislodged the bails, neither Hetmyer’s bat nor a part of his body was grounded behind the popping crease.

As a result, the third umpire determined that he had not made his ground. The decision left Hetmyer visibly frustrated, with the batter seen discussing the dismissal with the on-field umpire. West Indies captain Shai Hope also approached the umpire before receiving an explanation about why the dismissal was given.

The decision is covered by ICC Law 30.1.1, which states that a batter is considered to be in their ground only when some part of their body or bat is grounded behind the popping crease. Therefore, simply having the bat above the crease is not enough if it is not touching the ground when the wicket is broken.

The dismissal came during Axar Patel’s over and was followed by another wicket. Rovman Powell was bowled by Axar after scoring just three runs from three deliveries while attempting an aggressive shot.

Axar then completed a remarkable double-wicket maiden, conceding no runs for the remainder of the over. The over proved to be a major turning point for India as the West Indies lost two wickets without adding to their total.
