With several months remaining before the IPL 2027 season, speculation surrounding MS Dhoni’s future with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has already gathered momentum. Ahead of the upcoming IPL players’ auction, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan was asked whether the legendary wicketkeeper-batter would represent the franchise on the field in the next edition.

However, Viswanathan stopped short of providing a definitive answer, making it clear that Dhoni’s participation would depend on the former India captain’s decision.
MS Dhoni did not play a single match for CSK during IPL 2026. Before the tournament, the franchise announced that he would miss the initial matches because of an injury. As the season progressed, there was no official confirmation regarding his return, and Dhoni ultimately remained absent from the playing XI throughout the campaign.

His absence naturally raised questions about his future as a player. Over the years, MS Dhoni’s aggressive running between the wickets had been an important part of his game. However, reports of knee-related concerns and other fitness issues had fuelled speculation about whether he would continue competing at the highest level.
Despite not featuring in matches, Dhoni remained involved with the team. He participated in practice sessions and continued supporting his teammates behind the scenes. His experience and stature in Indian cricket also make him an influential presence for younger players in the CSK dressing room.

There was also speculation that MS Dhoni wanted to give emerging players more opportunities by stepping away from the spotlight on match days. However, his long-term plans have yet to be officially confirmed. Speaking to local media in Chennai, Viswanathan reiterated that Dhoni himself would provide clarity on his future.
“It’s a question you need to ask him. I also have to ask him. He informs us of his decision when he arrives in Chennai. I have a feeling that the chances of him continuing to play for CSK are there. He is still a player, you know,” CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan said.

Meanwhile, Dhoni has reportedly remained involved in discussions surrounding CSK’s preparations for IPL 2027, including decisions related to the coaching setup. The franchise has appointed Zaheer Khan as head coach and Mohit Sharma as bowling coach ahead of the new season, with further changes potentially on the cards. For now, CSK supporters will have to wait for Dhoni’s decision. Until the veteran confirms his plans, the question of whether he will return to the field in IPL 2027 remains unanswered.
