New Zealand registered an impressive 87-run victory over India in the fourth T20I at Eden Park, Auckland, on October 30, 2026. The hosts posted a formidable 259/7 before restricting the visitors to 172/9, securing their first win of the five-match series. India had already taken an unassailable 3-0 lead, but the result gave New Zealand an opportunity to finish the series on a positive note.

Following the defeat, India’s spin-bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule addressed the continued absence of Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy from the playing XI. Neither spinner has featured in a T20I during the ongoing New Zealand tour, despite being part of the squad. Bahutule, however, insisted that both bowlers remain prepared and are waiting for the right opportunity to contribute.

The coach explained that selection depends on the team’s requirements and the combination needed for particular conditions. He also highlighted how the two experienced spinners continue working behind the scenes, even when they are not included in the playing XI.

“I think more than anything, they are well-prepared to play. But whatever combination the team needs, it is very important to understand that they might not get that opportunity, and they are very much aware of it. At the same time, they keep working behind closed doors,” Sairaj Bahutule said.

He further expressed hope that Kuldeep and Varun could feature in the remaining T20I or the subsequent ODI series against New Zealand. “Whenever they are needed, in fact, they will be ready for it. So I feel it’s just a question of giving them the opportunity. Hopefully, maybe next game and in the coming ODIs as well, they will get opportunities,” he added.

India’s defeat at Eden Park also exposed some weaknesses in their batting approach. New Zealand’s imposing total left the visitors with a challenging target, and losing several wickets during the powerplay made the chase considerably tougher. The ground’s short straight boundaries and the cold, windy conditions added another layer of difficulty for the Indian batters.

Bahutule also explained that both Kuldeep and Varun have different roles within India’s bowling plans. The coaching staff has reportedly provided them with clear instructions about what is expected in different match situations.

“When you have Varun as well as Kuldeep in the wings, they too are ready to bowl at any stage. They play a different role in conditions like this, but there is a lot of clarity given to them in terms of what is expected from them. Moving forward, when the opportunity arises for them to contribute and play, I am sure they are very well prepared, and that will help them to get better and play more games in the coming tournaments,” Sairaj Bahutule said.

With the fifth T20I and a five-match ODI series still ahead, India could consider giving both spinners an opportunity to strengthen their bowling combinations.
