Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has backed young fast bowler Anshul Kamboj as a serious contender for India’s future World Cup plans, praising his ability to adapt to different bowling conditions. Ashwin shared his assessment during the ongoing second ODI between India and New Zealand in Wellington, where the Haryana pacer continued to impress with his disciplined bowling.

The 25-year-old has made an encouraging impression in New Zealand, using his seam movement and accuracy to trouble the hosts’ top order. His performances have also highlighted the maturity he has developed despite being relatively new to international cricket.

Ashwin believes Kamboj has the necessary skills to succeed at the highest level and could strengthen India’s pace-bowling options ahead of another World Cup cycle. “Good conditions for bowling, but Kamboj continues to show that he has the tools to be successful at this level,” Ravichandran Ashwin said. “He is definitely putting his hand up as India get into another World Cup year.”

Ashwin’s praise comes after Kamboj delivered an impressive performance in the first ODI against New Zealand at Eden Park. The young pacer claimed two wickets for just 22 runs in his allotted 10 overs, playing an important role in India’s five-wicket victory. His performance was a significant turnaround after a difficult international debut against the West Indies at New Chandigarh. Kamboj conceded 82 runs in nine overs without taking a wicket, raising questions about his ability to handle the demands of international cricket.

However, the Haryana pacer responded positively in New Zealand, displaying better control and confidence with the ball. He continued his impressive run in the second ODI by dismissing New Zealand batter Henry Nicholls early in his spell. With three wickets in his first three ODI appearances, Kamboj has started building a strong case for himself.

India are continuing to assess their bench strength and identify reliable pace-bowling options ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. Kamboj’s ability to extract movement, maintain economical spells and perform in overseas conditions could make him an important prospect for the selectors. If he maintains this consistency, the youngster could strengthen his chances of becoming part of India’s long-term plans.
