There is no doubt about the fact that hit wickets have always been embarrassing in cricket. The batsman seems to have left high and dry because of his own mistake. Such kind of dismissals doesn’t seem to be taking place regularly and people often look for videos of most bizarre hit wicket dismissals. Probably, Australian batsman Jake Weatherald’s hit wicket is in line to make it to the list.
One such incident of hit wicket took place during a warm-up game between National Performance Squads (NPS) and Victoria in Australia. the southpaw batsman Jake Weatherland, playing for NPS, tried to play a cover drive against a left-arm pacer but didn’t get the timing right. The ball went a few meters ahead after making a contact with the bat. However, what followed next was something which Weatherland can hardly ever forget.
After playing the shot, Jake failed to keep the hold of his bat and it slipped from his hands before falling onto the stumps. As he looked back to see where the bat is going, it had already hit the stumps and removed the bails.

Quite obvious, the comical dismissal left the 23-year-old red-faced. He stayed at the crease a little longer before taking the long walk back to the dressing room. Here’s the video uploaded by Cricket Australia’s official Twitter handle, Weatherald could be seen standing in disbelief after the comical dismissal:

Weatherald is lucky that it was a practice match between NPS and Victoria. Had it been in the JLT Cup (Australian domestic 50-over tournament) 2018-19, he would have had to face a few boos from the crowd as well.
Here are a few reactions to Weatherald’s comical display on the field including similar mistake from New South Wales batsman:
