In the final of 2018 WWT20 at North Sound, Australia women thrashed the England Women and won the crown for the record fourth time. England women were bundled out for just 105 runs (19.4 overs) while Australia women reached the target in 15.1 overs after losing only two wickets.
England skipper Heather Knight decided to bat first after winning the toss in that big final but the batting totally suffered a huge collapse from the beginning. Apart from the opener Danielle Wyatt and the skipper Heather Knight, none of English batswoman reached the double-digit scores. While they had a highest 23-run partnership for the fourth wicket, Wyatt played a knock of 43 off 37 balls (5 fours and only six) and Knight scored 25 off 28 balls (one four and one six).
Among the Aussie bowlers, off-spinner Ashleigh Gardner (3/22) bagged three wickets while the pacer Megan Schutt (2/13) & the leg-spinner Georgia Wareham (2/11) picked up two wickets each and the pacer Ellyse Perry (1/23) claimed one wicket. There were also two run-outs in that innings. After dismissing Natalie Sciver, Perry completed her 100 T20I wickets and became the second bowler (after the Windies off-spinner Anisa Mohammed) in women’s T20I history to pick up 100 or more wickets.
In reply, Australian batters easily reached the target in 15.1 overs after losing only both the openers. Opener and the wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy scored 22 runs while another opener Beth Mooney managed to score 14 runs. Ashleigh Gardner and the skipper Meg Lanning made no harakiri as they put an unbroken 62-run partnership for the third wicket to secure that victory. Gardner remained not out on 33 off 26 balls (only four and 3 sixes) while Lanning was not out on 28 off 30 balls (3 fours).
Among the English bowlers, only the left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone (1/12) and the off-spinner Danielle Hazell (1/19) were able to pick up one wicket each.
Ashleigh Gardner won the Player of the Match award for her all-round performances while Alyssa Healy won the Player of the series award for scoring most runs in this tournament (225 runs). While Australia won their fourth time Women’s World T20, the one-time champion England finished as the runner-up for the third time.
