The young Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant equaled a world record during the 1st Test of the series against Australia with the 11th catch that he took. He equaled the record which was held by Jack Russell and AB de Villiers, both of whom had taken 11 catches in a Test match. Rishabh successfully took the catch of Mitchell Starc behind the wickets to equal the record. He caught six batsmen in first innings and five in the next innings which helped him to reach the world record.

Bob Taylor (England), Adam Gilchrist (Australia) and Wriddhiman Saha (India) come next to Russell, De Villiers and Rishabh on the list of most catches in a Test with 10 catches. Rishabh is now the only Indian to be at the top, taking over Saha, who had a record of 10 caches.

Ever since his Test debut, Pant has been criticized for his ordinary wicket-keeping skills but he has already taken 31* catches in 6* Test matches, which is an achievement itself. Should he improve his wicket-keeping, Rishabh can emerge out to be the best man in this format. Here is one of the failures of Pant in the Adelaide Test:

On Monday, Pant also gave a perfect example of how not to take a catch. While attempting a catch of Tim Paine, he went for the ball – which was to his left – with his right hand and as a result of it, he even failed to come close to it. He could have at least touch the ball had he gone for it with his left hand but he squandered a chance to dismiss Tim Paine right in the first session of the game.

Rishabh has been one of the best performers with the bat right from his debut, probably one thing that will keep him ahead of Saha when he will be in contention to be selected soon. As far as wicket-keeping is concerned, Saha is currents the best man for the job in Test cricket but he is out of action due to injury, which has also seen Dinesh Karthik playing three Tests this year.
