On Sunday (13 January), the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL 2018/19) hit with a big controversy after a batsman was dismissed on the miscounted seventh ball of an over. It was the match between Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers at Perth and that incident happened during the second over of second innings of the game.
Chasing down 178 runs target, Perth Scorchers lost their opener Michael Klinger on the second over of that innings for just 2 runs. While Klinger played an uppercut against the left-arm pacer Ben Dwarshuis, Steve O’Keefe managed to take a low catch at the third-man boundary to dismiss the opposition batsman.

However, when Dwarshuis dismissed Klinger, it was the seventh ball of that over which was wrongly counted. The on-field umpires Geoff Joshua and Simon Fry miscounted that ball and once it was bowled, it was counted as a legal delivery.
Later, Cricket Australia (CA) released a statement on this and that was according to, “It appears there was a miscount of balls in the over and a seventh ball was allowed by umpires. As the ball was bowled it is deemed live and consequently the decision stands.

“The incident will be followed up by Cricket Australia’s general match review process and feedback will of course be taken on board.”

On the other hand, Perth captain Ashton Turner claimed that it was the unfortunate incident for Klinger.
Turner said at the end of that match, “There are so many moments in cricket where you think what could’ve been different if this had or hadn’t happened and it’s unfortunate for him. I’m sure he’ll be disappointed, but we’ve still got a long tournament and there’s a lot of time for him to find some form.”

However, that dismissal didn’t hamper Perth’s victory in that game as they chased 178 runs target in 18.5 overs after losing three wickets (178/3). While the opener Cameron Bancroft played the unbeaten 80 runs knock off 61 balls and also won the Player of the Match award, the skipper Turner scored 60 runs. Bancroft and Turner had the 98 runs partnership for the third wicket that led the side for the comfortable victory.
