On Thursday (31 January), the visiting side India suffered a big defeat against the hosts New Zealand in the fourth ODI of the series at Seddon Park (Hamilton). With this victory, the five-match ODI series is currently standing on 3-1 in India’s favour with the last ODI to go.
After winning the toss, New Zealand decided to bowl first. It was a disastrous day in Indian batting as they were bundled out for just 92 runs, courtesy Trent Boult’s fifth ODI five-wicket haul. In the skipper Virat Kohli’s absence, Rohit Sharma led the Indian side who was playing 200th ODI but surely he wants to forget this game.
Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan provided the 21-run partnership before facing the giant batting collapse. Dhawan was trapped for lbw by Boult for just 13 runs while the skipper Sharma lost his wicket for just 7 runs after Boult dismissed him through the caught & bowled.
Ambati Rayudu and the wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik both failed to open their innings while the debutant Shubman Gill, who came to bat at no.3, was caught & bowled by Boult after scoring just 9 runs. Earlier his dismissal, Rayudu and Karthik both were dismissed by the pacer Colin de Grandhomme in his first over of the game.
Kedar Jadhav was the next man to lose his wicket as he was trapped for lbw by Boult for just 1 run. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was bowled by Grandhomme for just 1 run. All-rounder Hardik Pandya was caught behind on 16 runs during Boult’s final over in this match as he finished with the bowling figure of 10-4-21-5.
Struggling on 55/8, the lower-order batsmen Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal provided the 25-run partnership for the ninth wicket – the highest partnership in that innings. Leg-spinner Todd Astle broke that partnership after dismissing Yadav on just 15 runs. James Neesham picked up the last wicket of that innings in his first over of the game as he bowled Khaleel Ahmed for just 5 runs. Chahal remained nit out on 18 runs – the highest knock in that innings.
New Zealand cricketer Grandhomme had the bowling figure of 10-2-26-3.
In reply, New Zealand comfortably reached that tiny target in 14.4 overs after losing just two wickets. Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar took both those wickets as he dismissed the opener Martin Guptill (14) and the skipper Kane Williamson (11).
However, another opener Henry Nicholls and the no.4 batsman Ross Taylor comfortably guided the team for the easy victory. Nicholls remained not out on 30 runs off 42 balls (4 fours and only six) while Taylor was batting on 37 off 25 balls (2 fours and 3 sixes).

A Ten-Over spell by Boult. Broke the back of India’s batting. But two dismissals that disappointed more came from the other end—Rayudu and DK. Both loose shots. #IndvNZ @StarSportsIndia
