The veteran Indian opener, Rohit Sharma went on a tour of the West Indies after scoring as many as five centuries in the World Cup. But he was ignored during the Test series of the Windies tour. Hanuma Vihari was preferred over Rohit as the latter wasn’t considered as a recognized part-time spin bowler. But, Rohit proved the presumption wrong in the Vizag Test against South Africa.

In the first Test of the three-match series against the Proteas, Rohit scored a century in his maiden Test as an opener as he scored 176 runs in 244 balls. However, during South Africa’s batting, he has also seen bowling on Day 3 of the third Test.

IN the Vizag Test, Vihari bowled 9 overs and gave 38 runs at an with a 4.22 economy. Rohit, on the other hand, was bowled out for just 7 runs with a 3.50 economy. Rohit Sharma, the first Test opener in his 12-year international career, scored 176 runs. Vizag Stadium is home to Telugu cricketer Vihari.

In the Test series against the West Indies, it was reported that Sharma’s differences with skipper Virat Kohli were also the reason. However, Kohli, who spoke to the media ahead of the Vizag Test, not only announced that he was going to play Rohit as an opener but also ensured that he was given enough time to get the form. Rohit batted freely in the Vizag Test.

Dean Elgar notched up a brilliant century – the 12th of his career – to lead South Africa’s revival against India on Day 3 of the first Test between the two teams in Vizag on Friday. South Africa still trailing by 117 runs with two wickets in hand as Quinton de Kock also scored a century as their skipper, Faf du Plessis was dismissed after scoring a fifty.
