Shubman Gill swiftly etched himself into cricketing minds as one of the game’s bright young batters. Now, at 25, he has emerged as a regular Indian team player in all three formats and even captained the national side in five T20Is. However, despite such a good impression and promise, Gill was ignored for India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad. The Rohit Sharma-led side won the event by beating South Africa in Barbados on June 29.

Although he could not make it to the World Cup, Gill is all set to come back to the international arena with the two-match Test series against Bangladesh at Chennai on September 19. Former India opener Aakash Chopra has named Gill, the skipper of Gujarat Titans in the IPL, among the best young talent India has produced in recent times.

Speaking glowingly of Gill’s cricketing acumen in a recent interview to a popular YouTube channel, Chopra, now a popular commentator, went as far as comparing his game sense to that of Virat Kohli. According to him, Gill absolutely understands the “pulse” of the game exceptionally well.

“The biggest quality of Shubman is that he understands the pulse of the game. Some players grasp it quickly, some eventually, and some never do. The greats you see, they understand it very quickly,” Aakash Chopra said. “Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni understood the pulse of the game early on. Shubman has that quality; he knows exactly where the game is headed and how to steer it. He’s absolutely brilliant and top-class in his understanding of the game.”

Many had been agape about his exclusion from the T20 World Cup. Aakash Chopra, however, offered support to selectors by saying that not even Rohit Sharma was picked for the 2011 World Cup.

“Shubman Gill has that future superstar aura. But you don’t have to force him into every format,” Aakash Chopra said. “He had a brilliant IPL season, scoring 900 runs. He will work it out. And it’s okay if he misses out now; remember, Rohit did not play in the 2011 World Cup and is now India’s most successful captain.”

Shubman Gill’s absence might have grieved fans, but his future certainly looks incredibly bright.
