Former India cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra has questioned how many opportunities Yashasvi Jaiswal is likely to receive when India face West Indies in the upcoming three-match ODI series. The series begins on September 27, 2026, at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. Jaiswal has returned to India’s ODI squad after missing the recent away series against England.

However, his return does not necessarily guarantee a place in the playing XI. Aakash Chopra believes the 24-year-old left-hander faces a difficult battle for opportunities, particularly because of India’s established opening combination. “How many white-ball matches will Yashasvi Jaiswal get? He won’t get many opportunities. Although he seems like a tempting option, for him to be in the playing XI, Shubman Gill will have to play out of position. What are we trying to achieve?” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

India have named both Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill in the squad for the West Indies ODIs, with Gill also continuing as captain. If the team sticks with Rohit and Gill as its opening pair, Jaiswal could find himself waiting for opportunities unless the management decides to alter the batting order.

Chopra also highlighted the broader challenge of giving Jaiswal regular ODI exposure. With a limited number of matches available in the calendar, the Indian team has to balance immediate results with the need to develop players for the future.

“Yes, you wish to prepare Yashasvi Jaiswal and keep him ready as the third opener. But is he going to be there? Will you be able to give him chances? There are not many ODIs, and he is not getting a place in the T20I side as it is,” Aakash Chopra added.

Jaiswal’s ODI record, however, makes his situation particularly intriguing. The young opener has played six ODIs and scored 285 runs at an impressive average of 71.25, while maintaining a strike rate of 97.60. His most recent appearance came against Afghanistan on June 17, 2026. Jaiswal produced an unbeaten 110 off 86 balls in the series finale, registering his second ODI century after previously reaching three figures against South Africa.

Despite that impressive performance, Jaiswal was left out of India’s subsequent England tour. His return for the West Indies series therefore gives him another opportunity to push for a regular place in the ODI setup. For now, the biggest question is not Jaiswal’s ability, but how India can create room for him alongside Rohit and Gill.
