Punjab Kings may be the only unbeaten side in IPL 2026 so far, but their campaign hasn’t been without its concerns. While the results have gone in their favour, the spotlight has shifted to their bowling unit—particularly Arshdeep Singh, who hasn’t quite hit his usual rhythm. The left-arm pacer has struggled to pick up wickets in the Powerplay and has looked slightly expensive, raising questions despite the team’s strong start.

Former Australia captain Aaron Finch, now an expert with ESPNcricinfo, offered a measured take on the situation. He believes Arshdeep’s lack of early breakthroughs isn’t necessarily a red flag.

“Yes, he hasn’t got the power play wickets. To me, that’s a good sign… if Arshdeep isn’t getting power play wickets and they’re still winning games comfortably…,” Aaron Finch said during IPL 2026 rivalry week. At the same time, Finch pointed out a subtle shift in Arshdeep’s approach with the ball.

“He’s probably just lost his ability to bowl the inswinger to the right-handers as much as he used to…He was a big swinger of the ball both ways. I feel he’s probably going more to his outswinger, that’s a bit more of a defensive mindset.”

Despite that, Aaron Finch remains optimistic about what this means for the Punjab Kings as a unit. “But, it’s a good sign if they’re still winning games and your number one trump card still hasn’t fired… that would give me a huge amount of confidence as a captain,” he added.

While the bowling has shown minor cracks, PBKS’ batting has been a major positive. The opening duo of Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya has set the tone with aggressive starts, already stitching together multiple fifty-plus partnerships this season. Finch was particularly impressed with the clarity in Punjab’s team structure.

“When you pick a squad, and you pick players, you want them to play in the roles that they’re most comfortable playing. Yes, you have to change that around slightly now and then, but you don’t want too many top-order players having to bat in the middle order.”

He also praised the fearless approach of the young openers. “Prabhsimran and Priyansh at the top of the order, they’ve been brilliant. Their ability to put teams under so much pressure right from the start is impressive. It’s the youngsters around the competition that are doing that more and more at the moment.”

With momentum on their side and a fearless batting unit leading the charge, Punjab Kings look well-set. If Arshdeep finds his rhythm soon, they could become even more dominant as the tournament progresses.
