Just when Chennai Super Kings looked to have found some rhythm in IPL 2026, a fresh injury setback has disrupted their momentum. Left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed has reportedly been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament after sustaining a quadriceps injury during CSK’s recent win over Kolkata Knight Riders.

Khaleel, who featured in all five matches this season, experienced discomfort in his right hip during the game. Subsequent medical assessment confirmed a Grade 2 tear, which is expected to sideline him for 10 to 12 weeks. The development comes as a significant blow for CSK, especially at a time when their bowling unit was beginning to find consistency.

The 28-year-old has been a dependable figure in the IPL over the years. In 76 matches, Khaleel has picked up 91 wickets at an economy rate of 8.95. More importantly, he had shown noticeable improvement in the past two seasons, claiming 32 wickets across the 2024 and 2025 editions. While his numbers this season—two wickets at an economy of 8.67—may not stand out, his role in maintaining balance in the attack has been crucial.

With Khaleel ruled out, CSK are likely to turn to Mukesh Choudhary as a like-for-like replacement. The left-arm pacer has 17 wickets from 16 IPL matches and could bring variety to the bowling unit if given an opportunity.

CSK’s campaign has already been a mixed bag. After starting with three consecutive defeats against Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, they have bounced back strongly with wins over Delhi Capitals and KKR. Currently placed eighth on the points table, the team will be keen to build on this resurgence.

Adding to their concerns is the absence of MS Dhoni, who is recovering from a calf strain sustained during pre-season training. Although he has been active in practice sessions and is reportedly batting without discomfort, his return date remains uncertain. Reports suggest he could be available for the high-profile clash against the Mumbai Indians on April 23.

As CSK prepare to face Sunrisers Hyderabad next, their squad depth will be tested once again in a season already filled with challenges.
