India opener Abhishek Sharma believes the team’s inability to adjust quickly to the challenging conditions in Belfast was the biggest reason behind their shock 34-run defeat to Ireland in the opening T20I of the two-match series. The reigning T20 World Cup champions now trail 1-0 after suffering Ireland’s first-ever victory over India in international cricket.

Chasing a competitive target of 183, India began aggressively, with Abhishek leading the charge. The left-handed batter smashed a blistering half-century off just 20 balls, giving the visitors the ideal platform during the powerplay. However, the innings lost momentum soon after, as Ireland’s disciplined bowling attack exposed India’s middle order and bundled the visitors out for 148 in 18.5 overs.

Speaking after the match, Abhishek stressed that adapting to unfamiliar conditions is essential in international cricket, particularly during short bilateral series where teams have little time to recover from setbacks.

“It’s all about how quickly we adapt to the conditions. That really matters as a team because when you’re playing back-to-back games, you have to understand the conditions as quickly as possible. As a dominant team, you need to adjust fast, and that’s what we tried to do today. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen,” Abhishek Sharma said during the post-match press conference.

India’s chase unravelled after debutant pacer Jai Moondra dismissed Sanju Samson with the very first ball of his international career. The hosts continued to exploit the helpful surface by consistently bowling hard lengths, forcing the Indian batters into mistakes. Matthew Hollard struck crucial blows, including the wickets of Ishan Kishan and captain Shreyas Iyer, while Ireland maintained relentless pressure throughout the innings.

Despite Abhishek’s explosive start, India failed to build partnerships or rotate the strike effectively once the field spread, allowing Ireland to seize complete control of the contest.

With the series now on the line, India will need a much-improved performance in the second and final T20I. Abhishek believes the team has already learned valuable lessons from the defeat and is confident the players can adapt better to the Belfast conditions as they aim to level the series before travelling to England for the five-match T20I leg of the tour.
