The 2025 IPL season has turned into a nightmare for Chennai Super Kings, with the five-time champions teetering on the edge of playoff elimination. What began with a promise — a spirited win over Mumbai Indians — has since spiralled into a string of disappointing performances. While MI have picked up momentum and surged up the table, CSK have stumbled, finding itself stuck at the bottom.

A major blow came when skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out with an elbow fracture, forcing MS Dhoni to return to the helm. Although Dhoni’s presence has added experience and calmness, it hasn’t translated into wins. With just two victories from nine games, CSK’s campaign is hanging by a thread, and questions have been raised about their auction decisions and overall squad balance.

Legendary Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist weighed in on CSK’s struggles and didn’t shy away from suggesting bold changes for the future. Speaking on Cricbuzz, Gilchrist hinted that the franchise should begin preparing for a transition, starting with saying goodbye to one of their most iconic figures.

“MS Dhoni has nothing left to prove. He’s done it all, achieved everything there is in the game. And while he alone will decide his future, if you ask me, perhaps it’s time for CSK to look ahead and plan without him. MS, I love you — you’re a legend and always will be — but maybe next year, it’s time,” Adam Gilchrist said.

However, Gilchrist isn’t suggesting a complete overhaul. He believes the team should still invest faith in veterans like Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin for at least another season.
“Jadeja still has that spark. Yes, he’s ageing, but he’s a rockstar — just like Shane Warne called him back in the day,” he added.
