India’s teenage batting sensation, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, arrived on the international stage with enormous expectations after a record-breaking IPL 2026 campaign. However, the 15-year-old has endured a challenging start to his T20I career, with England’s bowlers executing well-planned strategies to keep the highly rated youngster under control throughout the ongoing five-match series. Although Sooryavanshi has displayed glimpses of his immense talent with a few eye-catching strokes, he has struggled to convert promising starts into substantial scores.

The left-handed opener has registered scores of 14, 13 and 15 in his first three T20I innings, raising questions about England’s meticulous planning against India’s newest batting prodigy. According to England leg-spinner Adil Rashid, the hosts entered the series with detailed preparation after extensively studying Sooryavanshi’s performances during IPL 2026. England’s analysts and bowlers identified specific areas to target, and their plans have paid dividends so far.

Sooryavanshi made his T20I debut in Manchester, scoring 14 before falling to England’s disciplined bowling attack. He followed that with 13 at Trent Bridge and showed greater intent in the fourth T20I at Bristol, where he raced to 15 off just 10 balls. The youngster looked in excellent touch after taking on Josh Tongue with an impressive boundary and a towering six early in his innings.

However, England once again found a way to dismiss him before he could build a match-defining knock. Rajasthan Royals teammate Jofra Archer continued his dominance over the teenager, forcing Sooryavanshi into an attacking stroke that resulted in a simple catch for Sam Curran. Archer had also accounted for the youngster in the previous match, highlighting England’s success in repeatedly exposing the same weakness.

Speaking after England sealed the T20I series, Adil Rashid explained that the hosts had done extensive homework before facing the teenage sensation. “He’s not been around in international cricket for long. People have seen a lot of him in the IPL. So, you get the data. Our team would have seen where he struggles and where he doesn’t, and as a bowling unit, we are trying to implement that plan,” Rashid told News18.

The veteran spinner also acknowledged the unique pressure that comes with representing India at just 15 years of age. Despite Sooryavanshi’s limited international experience, England treated him like any other opposition batter by preparing specific plans to exploit his weaknesses.

Rashid, however, backed India’s approach of allowing the youngster to play freely rather than burdening him with excessive expectations. He believes Sooryavanshi’s fearless style should remain intact, but added that adapting to different conditions and overcoming difficult phases will ultimately determine his success at the highest level.

“They would have told him to just go out and play the way he plays. It’s only when things progress further, and when he plays in different conditions and hits a rough patch, that he’s got to adjust and find certain ways. For now, I think India has given him that licence,” Adil Rashid added.

While Sooryavanshi’s debut series has not produced the fireworks many expected, the England tour has offered valuable lessons for one of India’s brightest young prospects. As opposition teams continue to study his game, the teenager’s ability to evolve and respond to tactical challenges will be crucial in shaping what many believe could be a remarkable international career.
