The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 witnessed its fair share of controversies, but one incident stood out among the rest: the verbal altercation between Virat Kohli and Naveen-ul-Haq/Gautam Gambhir. In Match 43, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) hosted Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Ekana Sports City Stadium, where a heated argument took place, capturing everyone’s attention.
The dispute originated from a verbal spat between Kohli and Naveen-ul-Haq, but it quickly escalated when Gambhir intervened. Shedding light on this infamous incident, Pakistan batsman Ahmed Shehzad shared his perspective. Shehzad, 31, came to Kohli’s defense and expressed his belief that Gambhir’s actions were driven by jealousy, with the intention of stirring up more controversy around Kohli.

“As a viewer and a sportsman, this incident hurt my feelings deeply. It seemed like Gautam Gambhir was trying to create something out of jealousy. It appeared as though he was waiting for an opportunity to provoke a controversy with Virat,” Ahmed Shehzad revealed on the Nadir Ali podcast.
Shehzad further expressed his disappointment at witnessing such an episode unfold on the cricket field, struggling to comprehend why Gambhir would resort to such actions against one of India’s most prominent players.
“It was truly disheartening to witness such an incident. I can understand that Kohli had a clash with the player from Afghanistan, Naveen-ul-Haq, as these things can happen in the heat of the moment. However, I fail to understand why Gautam Gambhir directed such gestures towards the biggest player in his own country, Kohli,” Ahmed Shehzad added.
Following the altercation, Virat Kohli, Gautam Gambhir, and Naveen-ul-Haq were all fined heavily. Kohli and Gambhir faced a 100 percent fine of their match fees, while Naveen received a 50 percent fine for his involvement.
