New Zealand left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel has been impressing one and with his disciplined bowling at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai (his city of birth). He has already scared all the 6 Indian wickets so far in India‘s first innings. The latest one to get out is R Ashwin, who was left perplexed by a magical delivery that handed the teh veteran Indian spinner a golden duck.
From around the wicket angle, Ajaz Patel tossed up the ball nicely. The ball drifted into Ashwin with a slow pace, pitched on full length at middle and leg which brought the batsman leaning forward with a defensive stroke. However, upon pitching, the ball turned big, and beating Ashwin’s outside edge it kissed the off-stump.

Wicket-keeper Tom Latham and Ajaz Patel went up in delight straightaway. A confused Ashwin signaled for the review – thinking he was given out caught behind and didn’t realize that he’d been bowled! Ashwin stood there for a while before his partner Mayank Agarwal suggested that he had been cleaned up. It was really beautiful from Ajaz.
Things have gone exactly as hoped for by New Zealand in the first half-hour of Day 2 as Ajaz Patel struck twice in two balls – Wriddhiman Saha was given out lbw while R Ashwin was castled by a terrific delivery.

Patel completed his five-wicket haul with Saha’s wicket, and became the first New Zealand spinner to take a five-wicket haul in 1st Innings of a Test in India; the previous best was Jeetan Patel, who registered 4/100 at Hyderabad in 2012.
At the time of writing, India is 239/6. India’s hopes of crossing 300 and beyond are pinned on centurion Mayank Agarwal.
