The future of Ajit Agarkar as chairman of the BCCI selection committee remains uncertain, with the national selection meeting for India’s upcoming white-ball series against West Indies scheduled for Wednesday, September 16. According to multiple reports, Agarkar has not yet received any communication from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding a possible extension to his tenure.
India are scheduled to play three ODIs and five T20Is against West Indies, with the limited-overs series beginning on September 27. While India’s T20I squad is expected to have similarities with the contingent selected for the Asian Games, the selectors face several important decisions while finalising the ODI team.
The Wednesday meeting could potentially be Agarkar’s final assignment as chief selector. His current contract is reportedly valid until October 4, while reports suggest that a one-year extension does not appear likely at this stage. Agarkar had earlier been expected to continue in the position until the 2027 ODI World Cup, but the situation has reportedly changed in recent weeks.

According to NDTV Sports, none of the BCCI’s top decision-makers had contacted Agarkar regarding his future as of the report. It further claimed that Agarkar had told people close to him that he could send a ‘thank you note’ to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia after the West Indies selection meeting, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve as chief selector for three years.

However, the BCCI has not officially announced any decision regarding Agarkar’s position or indicated that he will be replaced. The reported lack of communication has nevertheless created uncertainty surrounding his tenure.
Meanwhile, the ODI squad selection is expected to generate considerable interest. Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya could be among the players discussed, while Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rajat Patidar are also reportedly in contention.

The selectors will additionally assess the fitness and availability of several players before finalising the three-match ODI squad.
