Akash Deep delivered a crucial breakthrough on Day 3 of the second Test at Edgbaston, dismissing the well-set Harry Brook and ending a mammoth 303-run partnership with Jamie Smith. England, reeling at 84/5 after early dismissals of Joe Root and Ben Stokes, found hope in the resilient stand between Brook and Smith, which gave the hosts a strong counterattack against India’s imposing total.

Harry Brook played a composed knock while Jamie Smith took on the aggressive role. Together, they rebuilt the innings with patience and flair. Brook, known for his white-ball exploits and calm temperament, brought up his ninth Test century with a classy boundary off Prasidh Krishna, cutting the ball behind point. His innings showcased maturity and precision, built on 137 deliveries of measured stroke play.

However, as Harry Brook began to struggle with cramps and the Indian bowlers applied pressure with the second new ball, Akash Deep seized the opportunity.

In the 83rd over, he bowled a beautifully disguised good-length delivery that landed just outside off, jagged back sharply, and sneaked through the gap to rattle Brook’s stumps. It was a moment of sheer delight for the young Indian pacer, who was playing just his second Test match.

Brook walked off to a deserved standing ovation from the Edgbaston crowd, having made 158 from 234 balls with 17 boundaries and a six. His wicket was vital, not just for halting England’s momentum but for reigniting India’s control in the match.
