Former South African express pacer Morne Morkel joined the coaching staff of India last week, where his former teammate Gautam Gambhir started his journey as the head coach. That role has been on offer before, with luminaries like Bharat Arun and Paras Mhambrey involved, underlining the prestige and responsibility associated with the position.

Very recently, Albie Morkel commented on his elder brother Morne taking up a new role in the team. The former South African all-rounder said it would be a big pressure job, and a person in that role would have very high expectations since the role is part of the coaching setup of the Indian team.

According to Albie Morkel, the passion for cricket in India, combined with the team’s history of success, makes this one of the most demanding coaching roles in the world. He hoped that Morne could gain the trust of the players over time in order to unlock all potential.

Morne will work with some of the best players in the world, for him obtaining trust from these elite players and showing how he can guide them every day toward being the best will be important.”

Also, Albie Morkel hinted at the pairing of Morne Morkel with Jasprit Bumrah, who he described as the best bowler across all three formats. “Jasprit is very special, and I’m sure Morne would love to work with him,” Albie Morkel added.

Morne Morkel is a cricketer with a great record, having played 86 Tests, 117 ODIs, and 44 T20Is for South Africa, garnering 309, 188, and 47 wickets, respectively. The 39-year-old shifted to coaching after his retirement from all forms of international cricket in 2018 and garnered a lot of experience with the Pakistan bowling unit. His new assignment with India will bring a new challenge, but Morne is relishing the chance to make a name as a coach and make his contribution to the success of the team.
