Royal Challengers Bengaluru captain Rajat Patidar made a bold tactical call in the closing stages of their IPL 2026 clash against Delhi Capitals, handing the ball to Romario Shepherd for the crucial penultimate over. It was a high-risk move, especially with two established finishers — David Miller and Tristan Stubbs — well set at the crease. In a format with razor-thin margins, the decision ultimately proved costly.

Shepherd, bowling his first over of the match, came under immediate pressure. Miller took charge with authority, smashing back-to-back sixes followed by a boundary to seal a six-wicket win for Delhi Capitals at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. The late onslaught shifted the momentum decisively, leaving RCB to reflect on what could have been.

The emotional toll was evident in the RCB dressing room. Shepherd looked visibly disappointed after the game, fully aware of how quickly things had slipped away. However, the team management rallied behind him. Head coach Andy Flower made it clear that the franchise continues to back the West Indies all-rounder, emphasising that such moments are part and parcel of T20 cricket.

Earlier in the match, RCB had posted 175/8 — a competitive total, but arguably below par at their home venue. The innings had its moments, with the batting unit showing intent for large phases, but a lack of acceleration in the final overs hurt their chances of pushing beyond the 180 mark.

Mentor and batting coach Dinesh Karthik acknowledged the challenges posed by the surface while also pointing out areas for improvement. He noted that while the team performed well for a majority of the innings, the finishing phase with the bat left room for more runs. At the same time, he praised the collective effort in the field, highlighting the team’s intensity and commitment.

Karthik also reserved special praise for the bowling unit. Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s control, along with disciplined spells from Rasikh Salam, kept RCB in the contest deep into the chase. Even Shepherd, despite the final over setback, had moments where he executed his plans well before being taken on by Miller’s brilliance.

Andy Flower echoed similar sentiments, stressing that the opposition’s finishing quality deserved credit. With two world-class batters at the crease, the pressure was always going to be immense.

RCB now turns its focus to their next fixture against the Gujarat Titans on April 24, once again at home. With lessons learned and strong backing within the squad, they will aim to bounce back quickly in what remains a tightly contested IPL 2026 season.
