With Rahul Dravid’s tenure as India’s head coach nearing its end, Gautam Gambhir has emerged as the leading contender to take over the role. According to various media reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has shortlisted the former Indian opener for the position, with an official announcement expected later this month. If confirmed, Gambhir’s tenure as head coach will commence on July 1, 2024.
Former Indian captain Anil Kumble has publicly supported Gambhir’s candidacy, expressing confidence in his abilities. In an interview with ESPN Cricinfo, Kumble highlighted Gambhir’s credentials, pointing out his leadership experience with the Indian national team, various franchises, and Delhi’s state team. However, Kumble emphasized the need for patience as Gambhir transitions into this high-pressure role.
“You have to give him time. He is certainly capable. We have seen Gautam handle teams. He has been captain for India, for his franchise, for Delhi. He has all the credentials to be that. But coaching the Indian team is slightly different. You have to give him time to settle in. And if he does take up the job, he will have the task of focusing not just on the current squad but also on the future of Indian cricket,” Anil Kumble stated.

Anil Kumble, who served as India’s head coach from 2016 to 2017, further underscored the importance of selecting a candidate who can provide stability and handle diverse situations effectively.
Former Indian captain stressed that familiarity with the team, while beneficial, should not be the sole criterion for selection. The primary focus should be on the candidate’s ability to bring value to the team and manage various aspects of the game.
“You have been part of the system in some form or the other, whether as a coach or player. It’s crucial to focus on the candidate’s credentials rather than their history with the team. The right candidate must bring significant value to the Indian team, possessing the stature and credibility to handle different situations and make critical decisions,” Anil Kumble elaborated.

Anil Kumble concluded by emphasizing the importance of choosing a coach who can guide the team through both current challenges and future developments. The selected individual should be capable of making strategic decisions that enhance the team’s performance and ensure long-term success. If Gambhir is appointed, his leadership and strategic acumen will be pivotal in navigating India’s cricketing journey forward.
