India’s premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who was rested from India’s limited overs squad since last past 3 months due to BCCI’s rotation policy, is looking forward to spinning his web in the upcoming Tests series against Sri Lanka.
However, Ashwin has an opportunity of achieving another feat in his Test career. as he needs just 8 more scalps to break former Australian speedster Dennis Lillee’s record and become the fastest bowler to pick 300 wickets in Test cricket.
Ashwin has so far scalped as many as 292 wickets in 52 matches he played in his Test career which started against West Indies in 2011. On the other hand, Lillee claimed his 300th wicket in his 56th Test match. He is currently at the top position in fastest to pick 300 wickets in Tests. Lillee is followed by Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan who picked 300 wickets in 58 games and Richard Hadlee in 61 matches.
Interestingly, the record of fastest to 300 wickets by an Indian bowler is held by former spin legend Anil Kumble who achieved the feat in his 66th Test. It will again be a great opportunity for Ashwin surpass another milestone as he is already the fastest to reach 250 Test wicket and second fastest to reach the tally of 200 Test scalps only behind CV Grimmet.
Meanwhile, Ashwin was seen practicing his googlies during the net session ahead of the first Test match against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The first Test match is scheduled to commence on November 16.
