Australia have already begun preparations for one of their toughest overseas assignments in recent history, with the team set to tour India for a five-match Test series in January 2027. Despite the magnitude of the challenge, head coach Andrew McDonald has confirmed that Australia will stick to their recent strategy of skipping practice matches and instead focus on intensive training camps in conditions that closely resemble those they expect to encounter during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The upcoming series will be Australia’s longest Test assignment in India since 1979, making it a defining challenge in the World Test Championship cycle. Australia have not won a Test series on Indian soil since their memorable 2004 triumph, and ending that drought remains one of the team’s biggest ambitions.

Under McDonald, Australia have moved away from the traditional approach of playing warm-up fixtures before major overseas tours. Ahead of their 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign, the squad trained in Alur, near Bengaluru, while they opted for a preparation camp in Dubai before their recent Test series in Sri Lanka. The management believes that focused training sessions on suitable practice wickets provide better preparation than first-class warm-up matches.

Australia will have only 12 days between the end of their four-Test home series against New Zealand and the opening Test against India on January 21. Despite the tight turnaround, McDonald is confident the squad will have enough time to adapt.

Speaking to cricket.com.au, the Australian coach said the team would not schedule a practice game before the series. Instead, the emphasis will remain on choosing the right preparation venue and ensuring players get maximum exposure to conditions similar to those in India.

McDonald also suggested that the squad for the India tour may differ from the one that finishes the New Zealand series. Selection will depend on form, fitness and the specific skill sets required to succeed on Indian pitches, where spin and patience often determine results. He added that certain players could begin their preparations earlier in Australia, with the coaching staff carefully balancing workloads alongside Big Bash League commitments.

Australia are yet to finalise their pre-tour training base. While the UAE has served as a successful preparation venue in the past, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East could force Cricket Australia to explore alternative options. Training in India itself is emerging as a strong possibility if logistical and security considerations allow.

McDonald stressed that the priority is finding a venue that closely mirrors the expected climate and pitch conditions for the series. With plans still being finalised, Australia remain focused on giving their players the best possible preparation as they attempt to achieve a feat that has eluded them in India for more than two decades.
