Indian players took the opportunity to practice with the red Dukes ball during the Indian Premier League 2023 as part of their preparations for the upcoming World Test Championship Final against Australia, scheduled to commence on June 7. Speaking to the ICC ahead of the clash, Indian all-rounder Axar Patel revealed that the players were provided with the Dukes’ ball during the IPL to familiarize themselves with its characteristics. However, he acknowledged the challenge of transitioning from white-ball to red-ball cricket after two months of intense franchise cricket.

“Even during the IPL, we had discussions about bowling with the red ball. We had the red balls, so we practiced with them. We had to understand when and how to play, how much time we have. The mental switch from white ball to red ball is undoubtedly tough, but we have had sufficient time,” Axar Patel shared with the ICC.

As per the quotes in India Today, he further explained, “The difference is that the Dukes ball maintains its shine for a longer period. However, during the IPL, we ordered the ball and practiced with it, so we have become accustomed to it.”

The Indian players arrived in England in batches, with those who did not qualify for the IPL playoffs arriving first, followed by captain Rohit Sharma, KS Bharat, and others. Patel expressed confidence that the team had ample time to prepare for the final showdown against Pat Cummins’ side.

While Patel himself has been in good form, it remains to be seen if he will secure a spot in the playing XI, particularly in pace-friendly conditions. Nevertheless, Patel remained unfazed, emphasizing the importance of utilizing one’s talent and skill.

“As I mentioned, we switch from white ball to red ball. Transitioning from SG to Dukes is a similar adjustment. You need to use your talent and skill, execute your plans, and find your bowling rhythm. Regardless of the ball, if you bowl a good delivery in the right area, it works,” Axar Patel stated.
