Chennai Super Kings made a bold tactical call during their IPL 2026 clash against Delhi Capitals, as young batter Ayush Mhatre became only the second player from the franchise to be retired out after scoring a half-century. The 20-year-old played a composed knock of 59 off 36 balls at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, anchoring the innings through the middle overs. However, with CSK eyeing a strong finish, the management opted to withdraw him in the 18th over, with the team well-positioned at 175/2.
Mhatre’s contribution was crucial in building the innings alongside Sanju Samson. The duo stitched together a 113-run partnership, now the second-highest stand for CSK against Delhi Capitals in IPL history. Only the 141-run opening partnership between Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad in 2023 stands above it.
After a brisk start in the powerplay, CSK lost Gaikwad early, but Mhatre ensured there was no dip in momentum. He rotated strike efficiently and punished loose deliveries, allowing Samson to settle before taking charge. Both batters had moments of fortune — Mhatre survived a couple of chances, while Samson was dropped on 52 — and Delhi paid the price.

That’s when CSK made the decisive move — retiring Mhatre to bring in Shivam Dube as a fresh power-hitter. The move paid off, with Dube immediately finding boundaries and injecting momentum in the death overs.
