Chennai Super Kings made a smart tactical call in their IPL 2026 clash against Delhi Capitals by retiring out Ayush Mhatre at a crucial stage, a move that helped them finish with a strong total and claim their first win of the season. The decision came in the 18th over, with CSK on 175/2 and the innings beginning to slow after a steady middle phase.

Mhatre had played a valuable knock of 59 off 36 balls, but he found it difficult to accelerate against the disciplined bowling of Lungi Ngidi and T Natarajan. With the death overs approaching, CSK decided to send in Shivam Dube, who is known for his power-hitting and finishing ability.
“There was nothing much. I was batting and the team needed some big shots. Shivam also can hit big shots. I wasn’t really getting it going, so the team planned it that way. It happens in the game,” Ayush Mhatre said after the match on Star Sports.

The move worked exactly as CSK had hoped. Dube added the late burst the innings needed, helping Chennai Super Kings push past the 200-run mark and end on 212/2.
You can feel the frustration after that 15(18)… fair.
But what makes it worse is what happened next.

Ayush Mhatre’s earlier contribution had also been important, as he shared a 113-run stand for the second wicket with Sanju Samson after an early setback. That partnership gave CSK stability and kept the scoreboard moving at a healthy rate. Samson praised the stand after the match and highlighted Mhatre’s maturity.
“Very important to have a great partnership. It never looked like he was coming out of U-19 — he was so calculative. Shows the character he has.”

CSK’s total proved more than enough, as Delhi Capitals were eventually bowled out for 189, giving Chennai a 23-run victory. Mhatre also spoke warmly about life in the CSK setup. “It’s very different and feels like a family for me. They treat me like a kid, so I really enjoy playing with them. The support staff is also helping a lot and working hard for us.”
