Bangladesh remain optimistic that sports diplomacy can help restore cricketing relations with India after tensions between the two neighbours escalated following the Mustafizur Rahman controversy earlier this year. The issue arose when Kolkata Knight Riders released the Bangladesh pacer ahead of IPL 2026, reportedly following BCCI directives, triggering a chain of events that strained bilateral cricket ties.
The situation intensified after Bangladesh withdrew from the ICC T20 World Cup in India, citing security concerns despite the ICC maintaining that there was no credible threat. However, Bangladesh’s government now believes dialogue through cricket can help rebuild trust between the two nations.
Speaking on Tuesday, Bangladesh’s State Minister for Youth and Sports, Aminul Haque, stressed that the government is committed to strengthening relations with India through sporting exchanges. He revealed that discussions have already taken place with the Indian Embassy regarding India’s scheduled tour of Bangladesh later this year.

“The current government is giving utmost importance to sports diplomacy,” Aminul said. He added that cricket holds immense significance for Bangladesh and expressed confidence that both countries would move past recent tensions. According to him, officials from both sides are waiting for India’s arrival in September, hoping the tour will mark a fresh chapter in bilateral sporting relations.
India are scheduled to travel to Bangladesh for a six-match white-ball series featuring three ODIs followed by three T20Is. The tour was originally planned for August 2025 but was postponed after relations between the two cricket boards deteriorated. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) later shifted the schedule to September to keep the series on track.
Preparations for the high-profile tour are already underway. The BCB floated a media rights tender on July 1, although the broadcast rights process has temporarily stalled due to logistical challenges. Board officials have also reiterated their willingness to further strengthen security arrangements, if required, to ensure the series proceeds without disruption.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s Sports Ministry has launched two independent inquiries into the T20 World Cup withdrawal. One panel will examine the reasons behind the decision, while the other will investigate whether the episode reflected a broader diplomatic setback. Despite recent disagreements, Bangladesh remains hopeful that cricket will once again serve as a bridge between the neighbouring nations, with September’s series expected to play a key role in rebuilding sporting ties.
