The only BBL game on Thursday (17 January) between Brisbane Heat and Sydney Thunder at Brisbane was abandoned after the massive power failure in the east Brisbane. That incident happened during the early second innings and the match failed to restart.

Chasing down the 187-run target, the hosts Brisbane Heat had the miserable start as they were struggling on 10/2 at the end of 3 overs. After the conclusion of that over, the two floodlights and some overhead lights went out due to the massive power outage in East Brisbane.

The umpires and both teams waited around one hour and while the situation hadn’t improved yet to play the game, the game was declared abandoned. Incidentally, only two more overs could bring a result of that game as an interrupted T20I game can result after both teams have played five overs each.

The power outrage denied the best result on Shane Watson’s century for Sydney Thunder. At the end of the game, both teams had to happy by adding just one point on each of their existing points.

Earlier, Sydney Thunder decided to bat first after winning the toss. The skipper Shane Watson single-handedly played a brilliant century knock to set a good total for his team. Before losing his wicket on 18th over, the right-handed opening batsman scored 100 of 62 balls with 8 fours and 6 sixes. None of the other batsman in that innings reached the 30-run marks while the other opener Anton Devcich (26 runs) was the only other man to reach the 20-run mark. At the end of 20 overs, Sydney Thunder scored 186/4.

In reply, Brisbane heat lost their opener Brendon McCullum (0) and the skipper Chris Lynn (4) at the very early stage. Another young opener Max Bryant (2*) was batting with the wicketkeeper-batsman Jimmy Peirson (2*) before the power outage interrupted the game.

The Thunder coach Shane Bond felt that the play could be restarted as it was safe enough but the umpires hadn’t the same view.

Bond told Fox Cricket, “We think it’s safe enough to play. We said we’d bowl our spinners because we want a game of cricket – obviously we’re in a stronger position (than the Heat). The umpires have said … we think its unsafe.”
