The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is on the lookout for a new head coach for the Indian men’s cricket team, with Rahul Dravid’s tenure set to conclude after the T20 World Cup 2024. According to reports from the Indian Express, Stephen Fleming, the long-serving coach of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL, has been approached for the position.
In a recent interview, CSK CEO K.S. Viswanathan disclosed that he had conversed with Fleming regarding the potential opportunity. “Actually, I got a lot of calls from Indian journalists inquiring whether he is interested in taking a job with the Indian team,” Kasi shared. “So I jokingly asked him, ‘Have you applied for the Indian coaching assignment?’ And Stephen just laughed and said, ‘Do you want me to?’,” he added.

Viswanathan also expressed his doubts about Fleming’s inclination towards the India coach job. “I know that it’s not going to be his cup of tea because he doesn’t like to be involved for nine to 10 months in a year. That’s my feeling. I have not discussed anything more with him,” he remarked.
The role of the head coach entails staying with the team for approximately ten months, given the packed schedule of the men’s team across various formats.
After the conclusion of the T20 World Cup, India is scheduled to embark on a tour to Zimbabwe for a five-match T20I series starting from July 15. Considering Dravid’s contract expires post the T20 WC and Ricky Ponting’s commitment to Washington Freedom in the USA, reaching a decision for BCCI and the former Australian skipper could pose significant challenges.

Dravid, who received a six-month extension after the 50-over World Cup in October-November, has the option of reapplying for the post. The deadline for applications for the coaching role was set for May 27 by the Indian board.
