In what has stirred emotions among fans and officials alike, Virat Kohli’s possible decision to retire from Test cricket has prompted the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to step in. A senior BCCI official revealed that the board has formally requested Kohli to reconsider his choice, especially with a high-stakes five-Test series against England on the horizon.

According to an IANS report, Kohli had recently informed the board of his desire to step away from red-ball cricket. Having debuted in 2011, Kohli has not only been a batting pillar but also a transformational leader who reshaped India’s Test identity over the past decade.

“He’s still incredibly fit and hungry. His presence in the dressing room uplifts the entire team. That’s why we’ve urged him to take some more time before making a final call,” the official told IANS.

Kohli’s Test career is decorated with over 9,000 runs and 30 centuries. His fierce passion, relentless work ethic, and aggressive leadership have defined India’s dominance at home and resilience abroad. The BCCI, well aware of what Kohli brings to the table, is not ready to let go without one last conversation.

With challenging away tours lined up — especially the England series — Kohli’s experience and temperament are seen as irreplaceable. Senior officials have personally reached out to him, hopeful that he might give Test cricket another run.

Although Kohli hasn’t addressed the speculation publicly, fans and former cricketers have taken to social media in support. “Virat, play for two more years. You are the backbone of our Test team,” a fan wrote passionately on Saturday.

At the time of the IPL 2025 suspension due to border tensions, Kohli was representing Royal Challengers Bengaluru — still as driven and focused as ever.
