The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has formally expressed interest in hosting the 2027 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final, signalling a shift in the tradition that has so far seen England as the preferred venue. According to a report by The Guardian, India submitted its intent to bid during the ICC Chief Executives Committee meeting held in Zimbabwe last month.

The WTC Final has been an English affair since its inception. The inaugural edition in 2021 saw India face New Zealand at the Rose Bowl in Southampton, while the 2023 final between India and Australia took place at The Oval. This year’s decider, between Australia and South Africa, is scheduled to be played at the iconic Lord’s from June 11 to 25, with tickets already sold out for the first four days.
Represented by BCCI CEO Arun Singh Dhumal and with BCCI secretary Jay Shah currently serving as ICC Chair, India’s intent to host the 2027 edition holds considerable weight. While the ECB has never assumed permanent rights to host the final, England’s predictable weather and reliable fan turnout have made it the de facto venue.

Even when England hasn’t featured in the finals, the stadiums have seen full houses, as was the case with the 2023 final at The Oval. However, the ICC harbours some reservations about moving the showpiece to India—primarily the risk of underwhelming attendance if the Indian team fails to qualify.

The England and Wales Cricket Board is reportedly pushing for a prompt decision, citing logistical needs such as scheduling a replacement Test for England in case the WTC Final is moved elsewhere. The upcoming 2025–27 WTC cycle, which retains the single nine-team division format, kicks off with India’s five-Test tour of England starting June 20.
If India is awarded the 2027 hosting rights and ends up not making the final, the real test could be in filling the stands—especially if traditional rivals like Pakistan make it instead.
