BCCI is planning to improve the bench strength of the Indian women’s cricket team

After the successful World Cup journey (2017) and South Africa tour, Indian women’s cricket team first time tasted failure as they recently lost the three-match ODI series against Australian women at home. After this series defeat, BCCI is planning to improve the bench strength of the Indian women’s cricket team.

Visitors Australian women dominated in the all the parts as they whitewashed (won by the 0-3 margin) the Indian women in the recently ended ODI series.

After that disappointing performances from the Indian women side, BCCI will now meet on March 28 to review the team’s performances and the future plans. COA member Diana Edulji, Mithali (ODI captain), Harmanpreet Kaur (T20 captain), Hemlata Kala (selection committee chief) and Prof. Ratnakar Shetty (convenor) are going to present in that important meeting.

Talking about the necessary improvement required in the Indian women’s cricket team, COA member Diana Edulji told PTI, “There is a definite need for more quality pace bowlers and spinners. The Australia series showed us that. They played our spinners rather easily while our team struggled against theirs. We also need more firepower in the batting department.”

Recently, BCCI started to give importance to the women’s domestic cricket which will surely take time to bring the result. The former Indian women’s cricket team captain, Diana said on that, “The recent tweaks in the domestic structure, including the introduction of the U-16 category, will take a while to take shape. But there is still a need to find the right available talent from all parts of India including North East, an area which has not been explored much.”

Since the last year’s Women’s World Cup, where India was the runner-up, Indian women cricketers have gained huge popularities in the country.

Talking about to keep the interest in women’s cricket alive in the country, Diana said, “Since they have all the facilities now, they must perform consistently. That is the only way to keep the interest in women’s cricket alive.”

Indian women’s cricket team is now busy to begin a new journey for the upcoming home T20I tri-series where Australia and England women’s cricket team will also participate. The tri-series will begin on March 22.
