The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) remains confident that the Asia Cup winners’ trophy will finally arrive at its headquarters in Mumbai “within a day or two,” following weeks of diplomatic deadlock. However, if the matter continues to linger, the Indian board is prepared to raise it formally with the ICC during its upcoming meeting in Dubai on November 4.

India clinched the Asia Cup title with a five-wicket victory over Pakistan in Dubai. Still, it declined to receive the trophy from Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who also serves as the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman. The decision came after India captain Suryakumar Yadav refused to engage in the customary post-match handshake with his Pakistani counterpart, citing the prevailing tensions between the two nations.

Naqvi has since stated that the trophy can be handed over to India but insists that he must personally present it — a stance that has delayed the formal handover for over a month. The unusual situation has left India celebrating its continental triumph without the physical trophy — a first in cricket history.

“Yes, we are a little unhappy that the trophy hasn’t been handed over even after a month,” BCCI joint secretary Devajit Saikia told PTI Video. “We’ve pursued the matter and even sent a letter to the ACC chairman around 10 days ago, but their stance hasn’t changed. They continue to keep the trophy in their custody. Still, we hope it will reach the BCCI office in Mumbai within a day or two.”

Saikia confirmed that if the issue remains unresolved, the BCCI will escalate it at the ICC’s quarterly meeting in Dubai. The trophy presentation in Dubai was initially delayed by over an hour, and the silverware was later removed from the field without explanation, leaving the Suryakumar-led team posing for photos without the actual cup.

Naqvi has reportedly suggested that Indian representatives collect the trophy in person at a future event, though no formal arrangement has been finalized.

“On behalf of the BCCI, I assure the people of India that the trophy will return,” Devajit Saikia added. “We won the matches, we won the championship — everything is on record. Only the trophy is missing, and it’s just a matter of time before it’s home.”
