The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to pay a whopping amount of Rs 800 crores as compensation to former IPL franchise Kochi Tuskers Kerala, who was terminated by the board after 2011 Indian Premier League.

IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla said after governing council meeting “Kochi Tuskers has demanded Rs 850 crore as compensation. Today we discussed the matter at IPL GC meeting and we will now place the matter before general body. Let them take a call but obviously, some negotiations are needed.”

The owners of Kochi based franchise won the case against BCCI in 2015 of breaching the contractual agreement. Thus, RC Lahoti headed panel declared that board will pay Rs 550 crore as compensation along with 18 percent annual penalty.

Despite this outcome, BCCI neither paid the money nor allowed them to take part in the league. A member of GC committee of IPL said after the meeting, “We have to pay Kochi compensation. All legal options have been exhausted. Normally when arbitration decision goes against you, it will be stupid to move Supreme Court appealing against it. We have no option but the question is how much.”

Shashank Manohar was the face behind franchise’ exclusion from the league and now BCCI has to pay the price for it. The member further said “It was one man’s obstinacy that is now costing us a bomb. Had Shashank not taken that decision, we could have worked our way out. In fact, before Kochi went to arbitration, they had asked for a compensation of Rs 300 crore. Even then our officials showed arrogance and now we will be forced to shell out more than double.”

Now, BCCI will try to negotiate the compensation. But the official member believes that they will not be able to reduce it to Rs 600 crores.
