India’s next big challenge in Test cricket is the five-match series against England, starting June 20. To ensure the squad is fully prepared, the BCCI has reportedly asked senior players like Virat Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma to feature in India A games ahead of the series. This move stems from their inconsistent red-ball performances in recent outings, particularly during the Test series in Australia and at home against New Zealand.

Rohit and Kohli’s struggles in the longest format have been concerning. The Indian skipper has managed just 164 runs across three Tests since September, including a disappointing tally of 31 in Australia. Despite his century in Perth, Kohli averaged only 23.75 in the series, failing to produce the kind of dominant performances he’s known for. Both batters tried regaining form in domestic cricket, playing in the Ranji Trophy, but with limited success.

According to a Hindustan Times report, the BCCI has introduced a policy mandating key Test players to participate in India A matches before crucial overseas assignments. As part of this initiative, India A will lock horns with England Lions in two four-day encounters.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that the first match will be played at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence, Canterbury, starting May 30, while the second will be played at the County Ground in Northampton from June 6.

However, one major roadblock is the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The IPL 2025 playoffs are scheduled for May 20, 21, and 23, with the grand finale set for May 25. Since most senior Indian Test players are key figures in their IPL franchises, their availability for India A matches remains uncertain. That said, the BCCI is prioritizing the England Test series, and those struggling with red-ball form might be required to leave the IPL early to participate in these warm-up games.

Meanwhile, Vidarbha’s Karun Nair is a strong contender for an India A spot following a stellar domestic season. The seasoned batter topped the charts in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and was fourth in Ranji Trophy runs with 863 at an average of 54, including four centuries. Additionally, head coach Gautam Gambhir is expected to accompany the India A squad, keeping a close watch on potential Test candidates.
