India’s ever-growing talent pool, largely powered by the Indian Premier League, is prompting the Board of Control for Cricket in India to rethink its T20 strategy. With a demanding international calendar ahead, the focus has now shifted towards building a strong pool of 30–35 players who can seamlessly step into the national side across multiple assignments.

The need for this expanded pool comes from a scheduling crunch later this year, with the Asian Games set to clash with a T20 series against the West Indies. This overlap has forced selectors to seriously consider fielding two competitive Indian teams simultaneously — a move that reflects both necessity and confidence in the country’s bench strength.

A BCCI official, speaking to NDTV, confirmed the approach. “The Asian Games and India vs West Indies T20 Series are going to be at the same time. So we have to look at two T20 teams playing. It is important from now to have a pool of 30–35 cricketers who can be called up for international assignments.”

This shift also aligns with cricket’s growing presence in global multi-sport events, including the 2028 Olympics. As a result, squad depth and flexibility are becoming key pillars of India’s long-term planning. The upcoming Ireland tour is expected to act as a testing ground, with a larger squad likely to be picked — a trend that could continue through the Asian Games and even a potential T20 series against Afghanistan.

Selectors are keeping a close eye on emerging IPL stars. Young batters like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Angkrish Raghuvanshi have impressed, while players such as Rajat Patidar and Ayush Badoni remain in contention. All-rounders like Shashank Singh add balance, while bowlers including Ravi Bishnoi and Khaleel Ahmed strengthen the attack.

Behind the stumps, Dhruv Jurel is emerging as a strong option, while Shreyas Iyer is likely to captain one of the sides in this new-look approach.
