On Day 2 of the ongoing first Test of the four-match series between India and England in Chennai, the veteran Indian opener, Rohit Sharma dropped an absolute sitter to give a lifeline to the English spinner Dom Bess (28*), and the all-rounder Ben Stokes gave a stern reaction after watching the incident.

It all happened on the first delivery of the 175th over when Bess stepped out of his crease in order to play over the mid-wicket region off India all-rounder Washington Sundar. Sharma, who was fielding at short mid-wicket, perhaps dropped a straightforward chance as a consequence of fielding for two days.

Mostly a safe fielder regarding catches, Sharma wouldn’t have dropped such a simple catch otherwise. Apart from Sharma, the Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and batsman Cheteshwar Pujara had also dropped a few catches, although much tougher ones, to give England deputy skipper, Ben Stokes (82) a couple of chances in the morning session.

Sharma, who was seen bowling gentle medium-pace to complete injured fast bowler Navdeep Saini’s over during the tour of Australia at Gabba in Brisbane, bowled a couple of overs of off-spin at the MA Chidambaram Stadium today. At Stumps on Day 2, England managed to reach the total of 555/8 in 180 overs with Bess and fellow spinner Jack Leach (6*) set to resume batting tomorrow.

Captain Joe Root, who had scored his third consecutive century yesterday, went on to convert it into a double century scoring a phenomenal 218 (377) with the help of 19 fours and two sixes. For India, all the bowlers barring Washington Sundar, every bowler (R Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Shahbaz Nadeem) got a couple of wickets.
