Veteran India pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar made an impressive return to international cricket on Thursday, October 22, opening the bowling against New Zealand in the first T20I at Hagley Oval after a four-year absence from the national team. With India captain Shreyas Iyer opting to bowl after winning the toss, the experienced seamer immediately demonstrated why his swing bowling remains a valuable asset.

Bhuvneshwar produced a superb opening delivery that moved sharply away from the New Zealand opener, beating the outside edge. He followed it with a disciplined over, conceding just four runs and giving India an encouraging start in favourable seam-bowling conditions.

The opening T20I marked Bhuvneshwar’s first international appearance since November 2022, when he also faced New Zealand. His recall followed an outstanding Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign, during which he claimed 28 wickets in 16 matches at an average of 17.89, establishing himself as a key figure with the new ball.

The 36-year-old brings considerable experience to India’s bowling attack. He has claimed 90 wickets in 88 T20Is at an economy rate of 6.96. His international career also includes 121 ODIs and 21 Test appearances, making him an important option as India evaluates its fast-bowling combinations during the five-match T20I series.

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner had already identified Bhuvneshwar as a potential threat ahead of the series opener. The left-arm spinner acknowledged the Indian pacer’s ability to extract movement through the air and off the pitch, even when conditions offer limited assistance.

“I think Bhuvi will love these conditions in New Zealand. If there’s anything in the wicket, he’ll find something out of it. [Even] on some flat ones in India, still manages to nip the ball and swing the ball. So with the new ball out here especially, he’ll be a challenge,” Mitchell Santner said before the match.

Despite his reputation, Bhuvneshwar’s T20I record in New Zealand has been modest. He has taken just four wickets in five matches in the country since 2019. His early movement in the series opener, however, offered a reminder of the threat his swing bowling can pose when conditions favour him.
