On 13th April 2010, Chennai Super Kings defeated Kolkata Knight Riders in a one-sided game at the Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. Ravi Ashwin emerged as the Man of the Match in the 48th match IPL match of the third season. In a crushing win, CSK maintained its fort by 9 wickets.
In the night match, Kolkata captain Saurav Ganguly won the toss and chose to bat first. He opened himself with the future T20 cricket legend, who was going to take IPL by storm in the upcoming year, Chris Gayle. The duo was followed by Brendon McCullum, Manoj Tiwary, and David Hussey.
Spin bowlers bowling the first over was not yet a trend a T20s. Ravi Ashwin was one of the pioneers who made it a tradition. In 2010, he was still an upcoming spinner who had brains and variations in his quiver. That season he had success in opening the bowling against the Deccan Chargers. He took the same role against KKR.
The first over went quietly with only three runs. Ganguly attacked Bollinger at the other end. Ravi Ashwin continued with the third over and changed the course of the match. Ashwin enticed Chris Gayle in coming down the track to attack him and Gayle was beaten by the spin. Dhoni behind the stumps knocked off the bails in a flash and Gayle had to walk back.
Brendon McCullum came out next and he was not comfortable facing Ashwin at all. He struggled on all the four balls that he faces and was finally put out of the misery as he got out on the fourth ball. By the 5th Over, KKR crashed to 18/4 as Ashwin picked three.
It was just an attempt at rebuilding from there on. Manoj Tiwary and Angelo Mathews got them to 139/8. In reply, Murali Vijay and Suresh Raina smashed the Kolkatan bowling to score the win with 9 wickets in hand.
