England pacer Brydon Carse has received a major boost after Derbyshire Police closed their investigation into an alleged assault at a nightclub last month. No further action has been taken against the fast bowler following enquiries into the incident, although the matter remains with the independent Cricket Regulator. Carse was seen in handcuffs outside a nightclub in Derby on August 23 after celebrating Durham’s County Championship victory over Derbyshire with his teammates.
The incident occurred while the England fast bowler was with members of the Durham squad. Derbyshire Police later confirmed that officers had attended Molly Malone’s on Wardwick in Derby during the early hours of August 23 following reports of an alleged assault. A man was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly before being de-arrested after his details were recorded.
“An investigation into reports of an assault in Derby city centre has been closed. Officers attended Molly Malone’s on Wardwick in Derby in the early hours of Sunday, August 23,” Derbyshire Police said.

Police subsequently made further enquiries into the alleged assault. However, after identifying and speaking to the alleged victim, officers decided to take no further action.
The development comes after Carse was withdrawn from England’s Test squad for the second and third matches against Pakistan. He has continued playing for Durham since the incident and helped the county secure the Division Two title in the Rothesay County Championship.

Despite remaining available for England’s ongoing white-ball series against Sri Lanka, Carse was not selected. His future involvement with the national team could now depend partly on the Cricket Regulator, which will assess whether he has a disciplinary case to answer over his conduct.
England white-ball head coach Brendon McCullum previously said he had spoken to Carse about the importance of making responsible decisions away from the cricket field. “I have spoken to Carsey a lot and it is the same message: you need to make good decisions off the field that allow you to be able to be the best version of yourself,” McCullum said.

The police investigation being closed removes one immediate issue for Carse, but the Cricket Regulator’s review means the matter has not necessarily ended from a disciplinary perspective. The fast bowler will now await the outcome of that process while continuing his domestic campaign with Durham.
