Virat Kohli’s unexpected decision to retire from Test cricket has sent shockwaves across the cricketing world, sparking emotional reactions from fans and former cricketers alike. As tributes continue to pour in, several prominent voices have called for India’s batting icon to be conferred with the prestigious Bharat Ratna—India’s highest civilian honour. Kohli, who many believe redefined the passion and intensity of Test cricket for a new generation, made the announcement just before India’s squad for the England series was to be finalised.

Adding to the heartbreak for fans, Kohli didn’t even get a farewell match, leaving a gaping void in the game’s emotional closure. Former India batter and Kohli’s one-time teammate Suresh Raina has taken a firm stand, appealing both to the Indian government and the BCCI.

Speaking on Star Sports, Suresh Raina said, “I feel the Indian government should award him the Bharat Ratna because he has achieved so many things for India.” Raina has also formally written to the BCCI, requesting a farewell match for Kohli in Delhi, the city where his cricket journey began.

Kohli’s career numbers in Test cricket are staggering—9,230 runs in 123 Tests, with 30 centuries and 31 fifties. While fans had hoped to see him dominate England’s bowlers one last time, the 36-year-old opted to step away instead, catching even his close followers off guard.

“After doing so much for the country, you must give him a proper send-off. A match in Delhi, with his family and coach present, is the least he deserves,” Suresh Raina added.

Outside the rain-washed Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Kolkata Knight Riders game at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, fans were seen buying Kohli’s iconic No. 18 Test jersey. Many expressed hope that Kohli reconsiders his decision. “He should take back his retirement from Tests,” said Manoj, a fan from Odisha, echoing the sentiment of thousands still not ready to say goodbye.
