Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has stirred conversation around MS Dhoni’s IPL future, suggesting that the real fans want the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) icon to continue playing, while subtly hinting at the presence of “paid fans” dominating social media narratives. Though he didn’t take any names, the undertone was unmistakable.

Harbhajan’s remarks came during a discussion on Star Sports ahead of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL 2025 match against Kolkata Knight Riders. When asked about Dhoni’s future with CSK, Harbhajan said, “He can play as long as he wants. Had it been my team, I might have made a different call. But the fans genuinely want him out there. His following is real, unlike the noise we see online — many of those are paid.”

While the cricketing world speculates whether IPL 2025 marks the end of Dhoni’s playing days, there’s no official word yet. Despite CSK enduring their worst IPL campaign ever, being the first team to be knocked out, signs suggest that Dhoni might carry on for at least one more season. The team is in a rebuilding phase, with a young core that still needs grooming.

As one of the few remaining torchbearers of CSK’s golden era, Dhoni’s presence is seen as vital, not just tactically but as a mentor. The franchise recognises the need to return to its championship standards from two years ago and knows that transition without Dhoni could be premature.
While the fans at Chepauk continue to chant his name, the decision ultimately rests with the man who has defined an era. For now, Dhoni’s retirement remains more speculation than certainty.
